A Staircase is a 1-on-1 topic which allows for follow-up questions. You can combine quantitative and qualitative research by publishing a questionnaire on the community website and ask follow-up questions based on the answers given.
Create Staircase
- In the Community menu, go to 'Discussions' and 'Staircase'.
- Enter a name at 'Create a staircase'. Click on '+Staircase'.
- Under 'Staircase questions', select the question types you want to use. Click on '+ Add question'. You can choose from single-response, multi-response, open questions and intermediate page. An intermediate page is a page that displays text without answer options, for example to provide information.
- In the 'Label' column, enter the name or number of the question. In the 'Question text' column, enter the question text. This is the question the respondent will see. Press enter to save the question. If you want to change the 'Label' or 'Question text', click on the pencil icon on the right.
- For single- and multi-response questions, you can add an answer option under 'Staircase answers' via '+ Add answer'. Enter the first answer option in the 'Text' column. Press 'Enter' to save the answer. For each subsequent answer, press 'Enter' to save the answer option.
- Optional: set a jump at 'Jump'. The logic is adjusted for this answer option. When the respondent chooses this answer option, the person will be directed to the corresponding question number.
- Have you created all your questions? Click on 'Publish'.
- On the community website, you can create a topic and select the Staircase. To do this, first create a theme via Dialogue. Read more about creating themes. When you create a topic on the community website and select the Staircase, it is helpful to include in the description an explanation of what a Staircase is and what is expected of the community member.
- Do you need to make changes? First click on 'Unpublish' to take the Staircase offline and then you can edit it.
Testing the staircase
You can test the Staircase yourself on the community website. Before logging in, give yourself a role with the right 'Staircase: delete history'. You can find this right in the Community menu under 'Settings' and 'Authorization'. Once this right is enabled, you can delete your answers at the discussion via the settings icon.
Export staircase results
In the Community menu, go to 'Discussions' and 'Export'. Here you can:
- Download the answers to questions from the staircase
- Download the answers to the staircase's through/follow-up questions
